How to Keep Your Pet Entertained Indoors During These Cold Winter Months

We've all experienced cabin fever and the stir-craziness that comes with the winter months, and unfortunately, this happens to our pets too. Since movement and fun are important to the health and well-being of your pet, you don't have to ditch those when you can't get outside. While it can be tempting for the whole family to melt into the couch for months of movie-watching, this inactivity can lead to obesity in your pets. In turn, obesity can lead to other harmful conditions such as diabetes and/or arthritis.

Feeling uninspired? As veterinarians, we want your furry friends to be as healthy as possible - no matter the time of year. There are many things you and your bestie can do when the weather stinks or you’re otherwise stuck inside. We’ve got eight indoor pet activities to entertain your furry friend. Read on to learn more!

  1. Learn something new together with your pet  – There are some great options in online group classes for pets and people. You can learn how to dance together, zen out on downward dog during a doga class (yes, that is dog and yoga), or try your hand at some DIY homemade treats or meals for your pet. We guarantee your pet will absolutely ‘woof’ them down!
  2. Play an indoor game of fetch – Sorry, Mom! Fetch goes against the no playing ball in the house rule, so unless you are willing to bend it, this isn’t an option for you. This game doesn’t need that much explanation; you just need to throw a ball down a hallway or in a room where your dog can have enough space to get a nice pace. Pull away the furniture in the living room and toss the toy! Or, use a big space like a garage or rec room. The ideal time to be playing this game is from 15-30 minutes, depending on your dog’s excitement to retrieve the ball. Some dogs will be over it and start to slow down; if this is the case, then change direction. Just be careful where you are throwing the ball, as you don't want anything to fall or break. Indoor fetch is a nice alternative on days when it’s too chilly or snowy for a walk outdoors.
  3. Buy some puzzle games – Food based puzzle games are especially enjoyable for your pet. The challenge is to get small treats or pieces of kibble out of the toy. Your pet’s brain will be active, and this is a good way to slow down a quick-eating pet.
  4. Teach new tricks – Old dogs and cats can learn new tricks. There are several commands you can teach your pet to keep them active and engaged. Tricks like beg, sit up, and roll over are fun for your pet who wants an extra challenge. After you have mastered them, make a video and share their new skill with us.
  5. Set up an agility course – Creating an indoor agility course is easy to do, especially when your dog is treats or toy-motivated. There are some great agility courses that can easily be made using things lying around the home. Set up open boxes, soup cans, water bottles, poles and chairs for jumping. You can also purchase a ready-made agility course online, too. Kiddos will have fun getting in on this one, as they can play Follow the Leader.
  6. Use your pet’s nose for a scavenger hunt – The nose knows, as you know. Put your pet’s Sherlock Holmes skills to the test by hiding various treats, toys, or pieces of their kibble around the room. Then get them to go scout it out with their keenest sense, their sense of smell. Just remember if you are hiding treats, make sure to keep them at a minimum to ensure you aren't spoiling your pet and causing an extra weight gain.
  7. Dance with your pet – Your pet may never have the moves of Fred Astaire, but they will definitely get into the groove if you put on some tunes and dance. Pick up your cat and get your sway on. Many dogs will hop on hind legs or circle around you if the music is right and the excitement of dancing is in the air. It’s a fun time for everyone in the family, too.

No matter what the winter activity, just make sure to get your faithful friend moving. As with humans, exercise is a key component of pet wellness. If you have any questions about how to keep your furry friend trim and toned during the colder months, give us a call.
